Understanding Corset Making Process
Corset Making With the Corseted Cowgirl
Corset making is a collaborative process. For this reason, expect at least three visits to my studio.
- During the first visit, I will take your measurements, and we will start designing your vision. From your measurements, I will cut out and sew the corset muslin or mock-up in an inexpensive fabric that can be tried on for fit.
- On the second visit, you will try on the mock-up, and I will perfect the fit and discuss your desires regarding how the corset should fit and shape your body.
- If there are not too many adjustments, your third visit will be to pick up your corset. An additional fitting may be required if any adjustments need to be made.
01
Initial Consultation and Measurements
Corset making starts with a conversation. I sit with my clients to understand their desires, needs, and style preferences. Whether they want a corset for fashion or a special occasion like a wedding, I take note of every detail. We discuss styles, from Victorian elegance to modern chic, and select fabrics and colors. It’s also important for me to understand any specific body concerns to ensure comfort. During the initial visit, I will take measurements in preparation for design conceptualization.
02
Design Conceptualization
With the insights from the initial talk, I will make a muslin mock-up using simpler materials. I will cut out and sew the corset frame in an inexpensive fabric that can be tried on for fit. This prototype is essential for testing the fit and making any necessary adjustments to the pattern. It’s a crucial step to ensure the final corset fits like a second skin.
03
Fitting and Pattern Corset Making
The client will visit my studio to try on the muslin, and I will perfect the fit. Every body has a different shape and shapeability factor that will need to be considered. And everyone has different desires regarding how the corset should fit and shape their body.
04
Construction of the Corset
Now comes the actual making of the corset. I cut the chosen fabric, sew the pieces together, and insert steel boning for structure. Embellishments, laces, or other decorative elements are added to bring the design to life.
05
Final Adjustments & Delivery
Once everything is perfect, the bespoke corset is ready for my client’s third visit. I also provide guidance on properly wearing, lacing, and caring for their new garment. However, an additional fitting may be required if any adjustments need to be made.
